Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4

The boy and the zombie looked at each other. Naturally, JC looked scared out of his wits - because he was! And, honestly, who wants to be out of their wits when it's so much more comfortable being inside your wits?

Zombi, on the other hand, just started looking around, very calmly - but alert and ready for action.

Then there was another HOWL. And then, suddenly, a figure – blurred by motion and darkness – appeared out of the shadows… and then it tackled Zombi!

Zombi shouted as he rolled around on the ground with this mysterious creature. JC couldn’t tell exactly what the creature was because it and Zombi were moving around so quickly, and dust and dead leaves and tree branches were flying around everywhere.

JC was about to jump in to help his friend fight off the attacking fiend, when he realized Zombi was shouting not with horror – but with delight. In fact, he was laughing!

The two figures on the ground then jumped up together and started hugging and bumping chests and high-fiving and hooting and hollering.

“Hey, Wolfey! Great to see you!”

“Wolfey”?

Actually, Wolfey was a good name for the creature JC saw in front of him. The guy looked pretty much like a wolfman – with a wolfish, fuzzy face, but with a man’s body. Since he was wearing only a pair of ragged black shorts, anyone could see that fuzzy blue-purple fur covered his light-brown arms, chest, back, legs, and even his feet. His head-hair was also blue-purple, but was thick and stuck out wildly. He was just a little bit shorter than JC and kinda looked like one of those dogs that crazy people like to dress up. But JC knew better than to say something like that out loud.

“Where’ve you been?” shouted Wolfey.

“I’ve been in JC’s room, mostly,” Zombi replied. “In The Real World.”

Wolfey then looked at JC. He eyed the boy up and down. It seemed like he was deciding if he approved or not.

JC held up his hand and waved. “Hi. I’m JC.”

“I’m deciding on whether I should eat you or not,” replied Wolfey.

But JC wasn’t afraid anymore. He just laughed, “You’re just a stuffed toy. You can’t hurt me!”

Wolfey inched closer. “Maybe in your world, I can’t hurt you. But here in our world—“

But JC whipped the magic wand out of his pocket, and with a flick of his wrist, the wand grew out to full size. Wolfey jumped back and shrieked like a little baby. “Eek!” he cried.

Zombi laughed. “It’s no use trying to fool him, Wolfey. JC’s an awesome kid. Why do you think I hung out with him for so long?”

“Ah, I was just playin’,” replied Wolfey, quickly regaining his composure and trying to act cool again. He turned back to JC and said, “But you know, we’re NOT stuffed toys here.”

“Yeah, I know. Zombi told me all about that. But I also knew that any real friend of Zombi was gonna be a real friend of mine, 'cause that’s how friendship works,” said JC.

“I agree!” added Zombi. And they all high-fived one another.

“Well, I’m glad you guys feel that way, because your old friends need your help, Zombi. That’s why we called for you,” said Wolfey.

“What do you mean, you called for me?” Zombi asked.

“Well, since we had no way to get a hold of you, Witchie got out her crystal ball and sent you 'thought signals,' asking you to come back here.”

“Ah! So THAT’S why I was feeling so down lately and missing you guys so much!”

“Wow!” added JC. “You guys know how to do magic? For real? And who’s Witchie?”

“A friend. I’ll tell you more about her later,” replied Zombi.

“So anyway,” continued Wolfey, "we were hoping you could help us out, because--"

But then suddenly, Wolfey froze.

“Did you hear that?” he asked.

“Hear what?” asked Zombi.

“That noise,” Wolfey replied.

“I didn’t hear a noise,” said Zombi.

“Me neither,” agreed JC.

But Wolfey, who didn’t look convinced, waved his hand. “Come on, and I’ll tell you all about the monster,” he said. “But not here. I don’t think we’re safe.”

And he started to lead them down a dark, leafy path.

JC followed, but began to wonder exactly where they were going.
